Last day of swimming lessons

Natalie and Max have had such a fun time at swimming lessons this year. They have really tried hard and learned a lot.

Five Months

Emma is five months old today!

She seems to have really grown up over the last month. She supports herself well enough that I can carry her around on my hip, which we both love because she's my little sidekick. She does make getting things done a little harder now though because she tries to grab anything in my hand.

She moves around and plays on the floor really well until she gets mad about not being able to crawl. She pushes her tummy off the floor, and she gets on her knees or pushes her bottom up, but she hasn't put it all together yet.

She weighs about 16 pounds and still laughs the best for Natalie and Max. I'm starting to wonder if she is going to have some curl in her hair because this July humidity makes her hair crazy. It sticks up and out and every which way once she gets hot.

She really loves to sit with the big kids when they're playing on the floor. She still needs her arms to help her balance, but she's getting better at it every day.

We sure do love this sweet girl!

Bunk Beds

Natalie and Max got bunk beds last week! They have been so excited about the prospect of bunk beds for a long time. So far they sleep well in them, and no one has fallen off the top!

Since all three kids will share this bedroom someday, the plan has always been to get bunk beds at some point. We told them that they could pick out a set if they could consistently show us that they can sleep like big kids. We made a sticker chart, and they got a sticker for every good night of sleep (going to sleep easily and staying asleep). They slept well, filled up their chart, and here we are - brand new bunk beds!

An Ode to the Rock 'n Play

Natalie and Max didn't sleep as babies. We heard about babies that slept through the night (or even just decently well during the night) and thought that their parents were up to some sort of voodoo magic because no way does a baby actually sleep. Then along came Emma. We haven't really had a bad night's sleep with Emma (yet! It's coming! Read on!). I'll give Emma and her personality some of the credit for the amazing sleep we've been getting, but I'm giving most of the credit to her wonderful little cradle, the Rock 'n Play.

It rocks, it's inclined, it hugs her little body, it plays white noise and music, it sprinkles magic sleeping dust into the air or something.

We love this thing. That's why today is so sad. Emma's rolling has really picked up over the last 24 hours or so. She has been able to roll both ways for a while now, but she didn't do it very often until just a couple days ago. Now she doesn't stay in one position for too long before she rolls to another. That's our sign to move out of the Rock 'n Play and into the crib. It's not safe for her to be in the Rock 'n Play once she wants to move and roll around.

So tonight we put away the Rock 'n Play, and I'm going to bed early, fully expecting a hard night.

So long, old friend.

4th of July

We were in Yates Center over the 4th and had a great time despite off and on rain throughout the day. Our cookout at my aunt's house had to be moved inside, but the rain let up right as it got dark enough for fireworks, so we set off some pretty neat fountains back at my parents' right before the kids went to bed. Other highlights of our trip included the kids' first s'mores, playing at the park, and (as always) collecting rocks from the driveway.
